The SAPS offers careers: Upon joining the South African Police Service (SAPS), individuals have the opportunity to assume either the role of a police official or a civilian employee. Police officials are engaged under the provisions of the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act No 68 of 1995), while civilian employees are appointed in accordance with the Public Service Act, 1994 (Act No 103 of 1994). The majority of operational police officials are actively engaged in the prevention, combat, or investigation of criminal activities. Conversely, the remaining police officials and civilian personnel undertake supportive functions.
