NSFAS Application 2023-2024
Your NSFAS status may be confusing to you if you have been tracking your application. “What does it mean? ”
The purpose of this article is to answer those questions – and particularly to explain the terminology used to describe the status you have.
What is NSFAS funding?
NSFAS provides financial aid to disadvantaged South African students who wish to further their studies at public universities and TVET colleges through funds received from the Government.
Students can apply for funding for the following year during a short period of about four months every year – and then they must wait to hear whether their applications were successful.
When will NSFAS respond?
If you prove to NSFAS that you comply with their requirements, they will respond. In the above definition, the conditions are pretty much outlined. Show that you have done so
- You are a South African citizen
- You are disadvantaged. This means either that
- You are financially disadvantaged
- A SASSA recipient
- Not above the specified combined household
- You have a disability and specified household income
- You have “vulnerable child” status with the Department of Social Development
- You are financially disadvantaged
- You meet the academic requirements and have been offered a place to study at a public university or a TVET college
So … everything depends on the documents you have submitted to prove that you are eligible.
How does NSFAS decide who gets a grant?
Delays and hold-ups are caused by checks on your eligibility.Your documents are the first step in the check. Have you submitted all the required documents? Has the work been completed to the best of your ability? Did they get signed and certified correctly?
After that, NSFAS will check what you have said with outside agencies. As a result, they will be dealing with credit agencies and government departments such as Home Affairs, Social Development, SASSA, and SARS.
Last but not least, they need to verify that there is space for you at the educational institution, that you are meeting the academic requirements either for new admissions or for continuing studies, and that you have registered.
A NSFAS bursary agreement must be signed before payments can begin. You will receive a grant if you meet all the requirements. In the event that even one of these requirements is not met, NSFAS can refuse your application.
