Transnet: Train Control Officer Trainee Programme 2023

A Train Control Officer Trainee Programme 2023 is currently being recruited by Transnet Freight Rail. Applications are invited.

Job purpose

Control and authorize the movement of all the trains (including heavy-haul and specialized trains) on the mainline and specific designated sections of the network in accordance with the applicable safe operational procedures according to train working rules, General Appendices, Rail Directives and prescribed Business Rules for ensuring a safe, efficient and scheduled railway service as outlined in the Integrated Train Plan (ITP).).

In accordance with the same rules above, control and authorize the movement of trains within the shunting yards and specific designated sections of the mainline.

Color lights are used to control trains, and various sophisticated elements, including but not limited to:

  • CS90 interface
  • Points
  • Signals
  • Train detection equipment
  • One or more interlocking’s
  • etc.

  • Saldanha
  • Worcester
  • Beaufort West
  • Kimberley

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science OR
  • A candidate may also have been trained, licensed, and certified as competent to perform Train Control Officer duties independently for a minimum of 12 months.

Functional Training

  • Train working Certificate / Diploma
  • You must be prepared to successfully complete a comprehensive theoretical and practical training program to be certified as competent to perform the duties of Train Control Official (Specialist) (Category C) on your own.
  • Alternatives include a Train Control Duties (Category B, J) Certificate of Competency for candidates without Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
  • 2 years continuous experience in Train Control (J, IB) within Transnet Freight Rail after being certified to work independently as a Train Control Officer (Mainline).

NOTE: Ex-Train Control Officers must be prepared to successfully complete depot specific training if the licensing is still valid, for example, if they last performed train control duties within the past six months (proof is required).

A candidate must also be prepared to undergo full initial training if it has been more than six months since their last Train Control duties.

External Trainee Train Control Officers:

Following completion of the structured train control training program (9 months), being found competent in a specific method of train control, and being appointed into the parent grade for a period of 12 months,

Work Experience

To be certified as competent to perform Train Control duties independently, candidates must have successfully completed theoretical and practical training

Standard Requirements

During the selection process and every 12 months, the candidate will undergo periodic medical surveillance and behavioral risk assessments for safety

Fitness for physical, hearing, vision, and mental tasks (to be verified through medical testing and safety behaviour risk assessment).

It is important to be prepared to work in an isolated area, work shifts, and travel.
